Rogers Will Charge 1.6% to Pay Your Bill by Credit Card Starting January 17, 2027

Starting January 17, 2027, Rogers will add a 1.6% credit card processing charge every time you pay your Rogers bill with a credit card, whether through Auto-Pay or a one-time payment. The details are on the Rogers support page about the credit card processing charge, which also lists the payment methods that stay free.
If you pay your phone, internet or TV bill on a rewards card, this Rogers credit card fee eats into what you earn. For most households the fix takes five minutes in MyRogers. Before you switch, it is worth running the numbers on your own card.
As of October 2026, Rogers says it will charge 1.6% on every Rogers bill paid by credit card from January 17, 2027. Debit, pre-authorized direct debit from a bank account, online banking, cheques, Visa Debit and Debit Mastercard carry no charge. Quebec customers are not subject to it.
The Rogers processing charge applies to every credit card payment on a Rogers bill, both automatic and one-time. Rogers states that the charge reflects the fees it pays to credit card companies.
| Monthly Rogers bill | Charge per payment (1.6%) | Charge over 12 months |
|---|---|---|
| $50 | $0.80 | $9.60 |
| $100 | $1.60 | $19.20 |
| $150 | $2.40 | $28.80 |
| $200 | $3.20 | $38.40 |
| $250 | $4.00 | $48.00 |
Here is where you will see it:
The Rogers page lists no exception for cards issued by Rogers Bank. If you pay with a Rogers Red Mastercard, plan as if the charge applies.
Rogers names three groups that are not subject to the 1.6% charge.
Any payment method other than a credit card is free, according to Rogers.
To move Auto-Pay from a credit card to direct debit, sign in to MyRogers (or MyRogers for former Shaw accounts) and change the payment method. If you already pay other bills from your chequing account, review our guide to bank fees in Canada to make sure the switch does not trigger a transaction fee at your bank.
It depends on what your card earns on telecom bills. If your card pays rewards on the full amount charged, including the processing charge, the break-even point sits just under 1.6%.
On a $100 bill, the charge is $1.60 and the total on your card is $101.60:
If your card earns less than about 1.6% on this bill, direct debit comes out ahead. If it earns more, compare it on our list of the best cash back credit cards before deciding. Also count the interest-free grace period: paying by card lets you hold the money a few more weeks, which only helps if you pay your balance in full.
Canadian merchants have been allowed to add a surcharge on Mastercard credit card payments since October 6, 2022, following the settlement of a merchant class action in Canada. Under the Mastercard merchant surcharge rules for Canada, a surcharge on a Mastercard credit card cannot exceed 2.4% or the merchant's own cost of accepting the card, whichever is lower. Mastercard does not allow surcharges on Debit Mastercard or Mastercard prepaid cards.
Rogers' own list of free options includes both Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit. For a broader look at what your card can cost you, from annual fees to foreign transaction fees, see our guide to credit card fees in Canada.
If you pay a Rogers bill by credit card, decide before January 17, 2027. Check what your card earns on telecom bills: below about 1.6%, switch Auto-Pay to direct debit from your bank account. If your card pays 2% or more and you clear your balance every month, keeping the card can still leave you slightly ahead.
