CRA Pre-Filled Tax Return: What to Do Before October 31, 2026

The Canada Revenue Agency will start offering a free pre-filled tax return in March 2027, and the window to get on its list closes on October 31, 2026. The CRA pre-filled tax return is aimed at people with a lower income and a simple tax situation who don't owe any tax. To be considered, you need a 2025 return on file, a CRA account and your correspondence set to electronic mail, all by October 31.
The first wave is small. According to the Canada Revenue Agency, 1 million eligible individuals will get an invitation in their CRA account starting March 2027, for their 2026 return. The program grows to 5.5 million invitations by 2029, for 2028 returns.
As of October 2026, the CRA pre-filled tax return is a free service for lower-income Canadians with a simple, non-taxable situation. To be considered for an invitation in March 2027, file your 2025 return, open a CRA account and choose electronic mail before October 31, 2026.
The service uses information the CRA already has on file to fill in your 2026 return for you. You sign in, check each pre-filled section, correct what is wrong and add anything missing. Nothing goes to the CRA until you accept and submit it.
The CRA has also said that the pre-filled return will reflect the data it holds in real time, and that invited filers will have until the April 30, 2027 filing deadline, a minimum of six weeks, to review it and respond. Responding means either consenting to the CRA filing the return with that data, or declining.
The CRA says you may be invited if all four of these apply to you:
Meeting them does not guarantee an invitation: only 1 million people will get one for the 2026 tax year. The CRA does not publish an income figure for what counts as a lower income. A non-taxable situation means you have no tax to pay for the year. If you are unsure where you stand, our income tax calculator gives a quick estimate.
If your 2025 return is already filed and your account is open, check the correspondence setting anyway. It is one of the four conditions, and the easiest one to miss.

April 30, 2027 is the general filing deadline for 2026 returns. Our guide to tax filing deadlines explains how that date works for most individuals.
The pre-filled return is a convenience, not the only free route. For people with a lower income and a simple situation, the CRA already offers:
Our guide on how to file taxes in Canada covers the other filing methods.
The CRA is clear on this point: you need to file a return every year to receive the benefit and credit payments you are entitled to. A year without a return can mean a year without those payments, even if you owe nothing.
That is the gap the pre-filled return is meant to close. Once your return is in, you can track your tax return timeline to see when the CRA processes it.
Before October 31, 2026, sign in to your CRA account, update your personal information, switch your correspondence to electronic mail and make sure your 2025 return is filed. That keeps you in the pool for one of the 1 million invitations starting in March 2027. If no invitation arrives, SimpleFile and free tax clinics remain free options before the April 30, 2027 deadline.
