The BMO Prepaid Mastercard is a reloadable prepaid card, not a credit card: you load it in advance and spend only the available balance, with no credit check and no interest. It is a useful option for managing a budget, shopping online with peace of mind or giving someone a convenient way to pay.

Because it is accepted everywhere Mastercard is accepted, it works just as well day to day as when travelling. The annual fee is $10.

A 2.5% foreign transaction fee applies to purchases made in a foreign currency. As a prepaid card, it does not earn rewards and does not help build your credit history.

A prepaid card uses money you load in advance or keep in the linked account. There is no credit line, no interest and no credit check to get one, which makes it useful for budgeting, teens or anyone who wants to avoid debt.

What to compare

Compare monthly plan fees, ATM withdrawal fees and foreign-currency conversion costs. Some prepaid cards pay cash back or interest on the balance; others offer an optional service that reports to the credit bureaus. A prepaid card on its own does not build credit history.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a prepaid card a credit card?

No. You spend money you have already loaded, so there is no credit line and no interest. Most prepaid cards run on the Visa or Mastercard network and work wherever those are accepted.

Does a prepaid card help my credit score?

Not by itself, since no credit is extended. Some providers offer a paid credit-building option that reports a recurring payment to the credit bureaus.
